Bodegas Muga

Impressive ruby-red brick hues that become distinctly tawny at the rim. Medium depth. It is one of the few wines whose flow is worth watching; it is leisurely, as in slow motion. Its aromas are hard to describe because of its volatile components. It begins with notes of liqueur mixed with hints of leather and damp earth. After a few seconds, spices such as vanilla and coconut begin to appear. Towards the end we seem to perceive a background of red berried. It travels through the palate stealthily, lining the mouth with silk and releasing notes of leather, cinnamon and vanilla along the way. After swallowing, a pinprick of acidity at the back of the tongue reminds us that this is a wine with a long life.

Wine Advocate

The 1998 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is 80% Tempranillo and the balance Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. It is aged for one year in large oak followed by 3 years in new French oak and 3 years in bottle prior to release. This medium ruby colored wine seems to combine traditional and modern elements beginning with a classic nose of earth, cedar, tobacco, spice box, and red currants. Medium-bodied with a velvety texture, the wine offers elegance and lovely balance but also plenty of fleshy flavor. The fruit has enough structure to drink well for at least another 6-8 years.

Score: 91. —Jay Miller, February 2007.
